Friday Finds

I've basically been mainlining Jessica Jones the last few days and it's been everything I ever could've dreamed and hoped for. I'm recapping it for Momentum too, so you can check out the first one here. Have you been watching it?

Watching: I LOVE Aziz Ansari, and this compilation of his work is pretty awesome. How beautiful does A Monster Calls look? This list of Sci-Fi/Fantasy films on Netflix is giving me a pretty great Christmas break to-watch list. ALSO THE CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR TRAILER <3 <3 <3

Reading: I had the total pleasure of seeing Claire Vaye Watkins read On Pandering as a keynote at Tin House's Summer Writing Workshop earlier in the year, and to be able to read it again is basically the best. All about fantastical, made-up languages, this list of books with deliciously bad women is really bulking out my to-read list. Patti Smith talking about masterpieces and her favourite books is a bit magical, but not quite as magical as Mary Gaitskill talking about the inherent truth in Anna Karenina. And hey, finish it up with this article on the history of women using perfume as poison.

Listening: to allll of the Adele. You should check out her live performances on SNL and just like, chinhands with me forever.

In Other News: These dogs being celebrated at Nepal's Kukur Tihar Festival are captured in gorgeous photographs.

Friday Finds

A little late for this one tonight, but hey! Your belated Friday Finds.

Watching: This week, I watched The Maltese Falcon for the first time and it was kind of amazing? I can't believe I hadn't seen it before! Also how cute does Hello, My Name is Doris look? I need to see it immediately. In other things I need to see immediately news, Preacher looks so great. I mean, Joe Gilgun! <insert a million heart eyes>. This video of 100 years of men's grooming is super interesting.

Reading: This article on the cult of American Apparel is fascinating and brutal. This one on how social media activates and helps the civil rights movement is too. Ghosts in Japan is dark and giving me brain worms of ideas. This article argues the end of torture porn as seen through Room and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. On a lighter note, this piece on how Joey and Pacey found love on Dawson's Creek is everything plus, y'know, demonstrates writers who grow with their shows unlike some (cough*HowIMetYourMother*cough).

Listening to: The new Adele song. Forever and always.

In Other News: Amy Poehler continues to be my straight up fave. The first look at Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them is giving me so many feels. I can' wait for it to come out.

The 50 Best Fictional Songs! I have an embarrassing amount of these on my iTunes. I've got to say, it's a TRAVESTY that there are no songs from Steven Universe and not a million more from Nashville on this list.

Hot Chip covering LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends inside their Bruce Springsteen cover of Dancing in the Dark has been my earworm all week. The new Gwen Stefani song is lovely and heartbreaking too.

Friday Finds

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I've still been in the land of unpacking as I settle into my new house. It's exciting but also insanely exhausting, and I'm looking forward to everything being in and sorted. As a result of the move, I'm missing out on National Young Writers Festival too which is giving me all the sads. I hope everyone going has an insane amount of fun though! I always do. :-)

Also, hey, episode 3 of Lady Parts Podcast is UP. You should have a listen.

I go on and off Ryan Adams, but his 1989 cover album has been my jam all week and is a cool take on Taylor Swift's awesome album. All You Had to Do was Stay is definitely my favourite.

Friday Finds

And the crazy train doesn't seem to be stopping. I'm still recovering from Brisbane Writers Festival, but am super pleased to say I was interviewed for Brett Michael Orr's blog, and wrote a piece on what novels should be adapted to webseries next for the Momentum blog which is also great. Anywho, what have you been up to this week?

HAPPY FRIDAY! I hope you're ready for the weekend as much as I am. It's been a hell of a week and doesn't look to be slowing down, not with Queensland Poetry Festival on this weekend and Brisbane Writers Festival kicking off on the coming Wednesday. Plus I'm househunting at the moment, which is basically straight up insanity. Ah well. How about you? Any weekend plans? Or are you heading to the festivals this year?

WATCHING

This week, I won free tickets to a preview screening of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and it's already a contender for my favourite film of the year. Go see it! Pack tissues!

It's not a secret that I LOVE Bob's Burgers, so these new Funko Pop figurines are at the top of my Christmas list.

READING

Reading-wise, I am alllll about Ms. Marvel. It's pretty much everything I've ever wanted in a superhero comic. I've re-read the trade paperback's way too many times.

Looking for something to read? Check out these 24 books you should read based on your fave TV-shows.

Brodie Lancaster is one of my favourite music and pop culture writers and this piece on the disregard for fangirls is both fascinating and pretty much sums up my highschool experience.

LISTENING TO

I'm a huge Sara Bareilles fan, and a huge fan of the film Waitress, so the fact that she's written the music for the stage musical is wonderful. Especially if this song is anything to go by.

Also this video of Little Mix singing acapella is basically giving me life for the weekend.

Friday Finds

Hey! It''s your new look~ Friday Finds. I've been thinking of mixing it up the format for a few months, but thought I'd leave it til I got back from the States. So here it is! I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that I'll be pulling back from blogging a bit. Not substantially, but I'm merging my Sunday Short post into my Friday Finds, and will be blogging on Mondays and Wednesdays too. It's a bit of a shift, but one I think I'll be able to stick to a bit more rigorously as my attentions start to be dedicated to other projects.

In related (and very exciting) news, I'm one of the new bloggers for Momentum Press! I'll be linking my posts here during my Friday Finds, so you can expect to see those popping up more and more.

Anywho, onwards and upwards!

WATCHING

I tried to watch 30 Rock years ago and couldn't get into it. Last week, I decided to give it another shot and basically powered through two and a half seasons in a matter of days. I guess this is my life now.

I also saw Trainwreck the other day! It was a lot of fun, and basically cemented my love for Amy Schumer and Bill Hader, although I agree with the reviews which like, IDK, she didn't seem like much of a mess to me?

In things I haven't watched yet, but am very excited to: Vinyl and Westworld look amazing! While it would've been great if they'd cast a trans actor in the lead role, but About Ray still looks very good. The Keeping Room definitely looks up my alley too.

READING

This week, I've been reading a few things, but nothing has stood out as much as Zora  Their Eyes Were Watching God

EW has a terrific article exploring what went wrong with Josh Trank's Fantastic Four.
Read it here.

LISTENING TO

It's not a secret that I am OBSESSED with Steven Universe and Women Write About Comics has compiled a ton of the wonderful music from it, so basically I'm listening to this non-stop.

Everything comes around

About four hours from me writing this post, I'll be on a plane to America. Not only will I be heading to Tin House's Summer Writing Workshop to learn from the tremendous Jenny Offill, but I'll be generally travelling and exploring the country - Seattle to Portland, then New Orleans, New York, Boston before coming back home to Brisbane.

I've been planning the trip since February, but oddly it hasn't really felt real yet. Not even today, with my travel wallet full, my bags packed, and a touch hungover after a wonderful leaving party/picnic yesterday, has the trip settled in the snow globe of my head. Well, I suppose it'll have to today.

Anywho, a mixtape. Not all the songs are embedding for some reason, so you might need to open it in Spotify to hear them all. Enjoy!

Friday Finds

Last year, I supported Bloomers on Pozible crowdfunding, so it's a total thrill to see the delightful short film come to life. You can (and should!) watch it here.

Your week in trailers: The Stanford Prison Experiment looks terrific. People Places Things looks straight up delightful. The Peanuts Movie has both gorgeous animation and a pretty cute storyline from the looks of it, so will definitely be up on my to-watch list. Sicario is a tense and brilliantly made trailer.

- Writing a murder mystery! Now in comic form!

- This American Gods concept art is making me crazy excited for the series!

- 20 comic book series to read this summer (or winter, if you're like me and in Aus). I'm reading six of these already, but have quite a few to catch up on.

- 50 of film noir's most fashionable moments.

And, for your weekend, someone on 8tracks made a modern Legally Blonde soundtrack AKA closest way to my big damn heart.

Is that all there is?

I'm a huge fan of Mad Men, so starting on the final run of episodes has a real bitter sweet feel to it. That said, the eighth episode of the season (that really felt like a new season opener, even if it's still technically season 7) played the marvelous song Is That All There Is? three times, which is a pretty rare feat for Mad Men.

As a result though, I've pretty much played the song on repeat for the last two weeks, hence the name of this post and, well, look it may or not be on several different writing playlists now.

In real life news - May's gotten a bit explosive - my mum's moving interstate which is very exciting for her, but also something that makes me a little sad as the opportunity for me to just drop in twice a week has more or less been shot. My sister's back in town though, and I'll be seeing more and more of my little brother. It's strange, given I had such constant relationships with family growing up to have what now is almost a kaleidoscope of relationships - changing shape and form and colour, to and from and back again.

Ah well. Fuel for writing, right?

On that note, I've set myself a few big writing goals this month from finalising the short story collection to getting out a new draft of my manuscript. I've written a ton of short fiction not a part of the collection over the last few weeks, so to redirect my focus again should hopefully be a good thing.

Just lastly, I'm thrilled to say that I will have a short story in the final Sleepers Almanac too, which is super exciting, so stay tuned for news on that too.

How about you though? What have you got set for May?

Friday Finds

The last few weeks have been crazy stressful for me and they don't really look to be slowing down. It's not exactly a good thing or a bad thing, just something that's keeping me very busy. In some ways, it's been good because it's making me re-evaluate my priorities again. Making me think about where I am now and where I want to be, which are starting to look like very different things.

But that's a whole other conversation. Have this week's Friday Finds instead.
- Your week in trailers: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl looks straight up terrific. True Detective season 2 should be interesting. This Amy Winehouse documentary looks amazing and heartbreaking.

- These 10 lady podcasts you should be listening to are definitely going onto my list!

- This cover of Creep is straight up amazing.

- The best literary references in Mad Men. I'm so sad for the series to end!

- How stunning are these European libraries? I want to visit them alllll.

This post on the women dominating this summer movie season has some fascinating insight.

This piece on disability in pop culture and particularly in relation to Batgirl is a terrific read.

Nicki Minaj and the Inevitable Politicisation of Celebrity Abortions is another great read and sheds a compelling light on it.

No one will ever love you

April 2015 by Sophie Overett on Grooveshark

I had all these plans for the Easter break, but between seeing family and friends, I accidentally mainlined a season of Nashville. It's super trashy, but in the best possible way and I am basically obsessed. Plus the music is to die for. You're lucky this month the mixtape isn't just the soundtrack of the series. I got away with just two songs - Sam Palladio and Claire Bowen singing If I Didn't Know Better and Connie Britton and Charles Esten's No One Will Ever Love You. Both are pretty remarkable / my jam.

March slipped through my fingers a bit. I spent most of it down the rabbit hole writing a new draft of a young adult manuscript, and between that and the day job, the rest of my life and obligations took a bit of a back step. I've been catching up on that this week - seeing people and scheduling posts, watching movies for The Oscars Project.

As a result, I haven't written anything seriously since the end of last month, but that's changing. I've fallen back in love with a few short stories so am hoping to get those out into the ether this week before plunging into another longer process.

It's been nice for the little break, even if I have filled it up with Nashville.

How about you? What are you working on in April?

Friday Finds

This has been such a slow week for this blog, sorry! I did have things scheduled, but I've been distracted trying to finish a YA manuscript to submit to The Text Prize. It's one I've been working on for quite a while, but I made the questionable decision to make some drastic changes. It's been good, and ambitious, and good, and I'm really happy with the direction of it, so fingers crossed, right?

Anywho, your Friday Finds.

The new Inside Out trailer is infinitely better than the first. I am getting progressively more and more excited for Netflix's Daredevil. Roar looks kind of batshit. Pioneering woman surfers in Iran!

One of the things that got me into superheroes and geek culture was watching the Teen Titans series when I was a young teenager. Starfire was always my fave, which is why it's been a little rage-inducing to see her character so poorly treated recently in the comics. Her new costume though is certainly a step in the right direction. There's a great #longread on her history over at Women Write About Comics which I totally recommend everyone read.

Friday Finds

The Working Life of Gwyned Filling, the career girl of 1948 is a really interesting read. AC Bern goes back through an old copy of LIFE Magazine to dissect an article covering a week in the life of a working girl in the 40s. It's a great resource, particularly if you're working on something set around the era.

This piece care of Thought Catalogue on women soldiers in the civil war is fascinating too.

Working as a freelance artist, writer or cultural producer? ArtsHub has a terrific piece on their website about how to ask for money.
