I've basically been mainlining Jessica Jones the last few days and it's been everything I ever could've dreamed and hoped for. I'm recapping it for Momentum too, so you can check out the first one here. Have you been watching it?
Watching: I LOVE Aziz Ansari, and this compilation of his work is pretty awesome. How beautiful does A Monster Calls look? This list of Sci-Fi/Fantasy films on Netflix is giving me a pretty great Christmas break to-watch list. ALSO THE CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR TRAILER <3 <3 <3
Reading: I had the total pleasure of seeing Claire Vaye Watkins read On Pandering as a keynote at Tin House's Summer Writing Workshop earlier in the year, and to be able to read it again is basically the best. All about fantastical, made-up languages, this list of books with deliciously bad women is really bulking out my to-read list. Patti Smith talking about masterpieces and her favourite books is a bit magical, but not quite as magical as Mary Gaitskill talking about the inherent truth in Anna Karenina. And hey, finish it up with this article on the history of women using perfume as poison.
Listening: to allll of the Adele. You should check out her live performances on SNL and just like, chinhands with me forever.
In Other News: These dogs being celebrated at Nepal's Kukur Tihar Festival are captured in gorgeous photographs.

Friday Finds
A little late for this one tonight, but hey! Your belated Friday Finds.
Watching: This week, I watched The Maltese Falcon for the first time and it was kind of amazing? I can't believe I hadn't seen it before! Also how cute does Hello, My Name is Doris look? I need to see it immediately. In other things I need to see immediately news, Preacher looks so great. I mean, Joe Gilgun! <insert a million heart eyes>. This video of 100 years of men's grooming is super interesting.
Reading: This article on the cult of American Apparel is fascinating and brutal. This one on how social media activates and helps the civil rights movement is too. Ghosts in Japan is dark and giving me brain worms of ideas. This article argues the end of torture porn as seen through Room and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. On a lighter note, this piece on how Joey and Pacey found love on Dawson's Creek is everything plus, y'know, demonstrates writers who grow with their shows unlike some (cough*HowIMetYourMother*cough).
Listening to: The new Adele song. Forever and always.
In Other News: Amy Poehler continues to be my straight up fave. The first look at Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them is giving me so many feels. I can' wait for it to come out.

WATCHING
I saw Crimson Peak last weekend and really liked it. This interview with Guillermo del Toro made me like it even more.
The new Aziz Ansari show, Master of None, looks ridiculously awesome.
READING
This article on the history of the psychology of Peanuts and Charlie Schulz is super interesting.
Anything by Helen Garner is a must-read, and this piece about grief, true crime and the darkness in us all is beautiful and devastating.
I am making non-stop heart eyes at these bookish wedding venues.
LISTENING TO
The 50 Best Fictional Songs! I have an embarrassing amount of these on my iTunes. I've got to say, it's a TRAVESTY that there are no songs from Steven Universe and not a million more from Nashville on this list.
Hot Chip covering LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends inside their Bruce Springsteen cover of Dancing in the Dark has been my earworm all week. The new Gwen Stefani song is lovely and heartbreaking too.

In one of those stranger twists of fate, I have two short stories out in two different publications this week, 'Undertow', which is out in the latest Sleepers Almanac and 'Christchurch' which is out in Volume 6 of The Suburban Review. Funnily enough, they're both old stories which went through a LOT of rejection before this point, so it's a thrill to see them in print after so long. Anyway, you should pick them up! Have a read! Let me know what you think.
Otherwise, you should check these out instead -
WATCHING
I am so excited for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's like Buffy meets, well, Jane Austen, and that is definitely up my alley.
The 50 Best Movie Documentaries of All Time! There's a lot here to add to my to-watch list!
READING
I've long been a bit obsessed with ballet, and this piece on what happens after ballerinas retire is a fascinating look at the devotion it takes to be one and the lack of identity when you can't be one any more.
This piece on the history of female anger is similarly fascinating.
And I am lusting HARD after these new Shakespeare covers. Can't wait to get my hands on them!
Sadder in tone, but beautiful is this piece on the new Final Girls film and reconciling yourself with the loss of a parent.
These Harry Potter costumes no one wants you to dress in for Halloween are hilarious and heartbreaking.
And feel a little spooky this Halloween with these monsters in literature.

I got to have a pretty long long weekend this week, taking from Saturday to Wednesday off, and it was great to be able to catch-up on a few things, especially getting my new house together and moving my cats in (they'd been at my dad's so as not to get underfoot or panicked during the move). They settled in wonderfully, which is pretty great. I mean, look at these guys.
This weekend, I want to catch up on some reading. I've also got a birthday or two and will be listening to some awesome readings at Whispers tomorrow which will be pretty darn great too.
How about you though? What are you up to this weekend?
WATCHING
The Australian Japanese Film Festival program is out! Pretty sure I'm going to need a five-film pass this year. There's so many great films screening.
32 horror movies that aren't about women being sex-murdered.
READING
As stress has been pretty high the last few weeks, I've really been getting through it by inhaling The Vampire Academy books. I'm up to the third in the series, Shadow Kiss, and it's kind of bad but also amazing.
So, it's not really reading, or at least not serious reading, but the latest installment of art commentary at The Toast is Women Dancing Miserably in Western Art and that is the straight up best.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I've still been in the land of unpacking as I settle into my new house. It's exciting but also insanely exhausting, and I'm looking forward to everything being in and sorted. As a result of the move, I'm missing out on National Young Writers Festival too which is giving me all the sads. I hope everyone going has an insane amount of fun though! I always do. :-)
Also, hey, episode 3 of Lady Parts Podcast is UP. You should have a listen.
WATCHING
I've been watching Southland the last couple of weeks, and am more impressed than I thought I would be. It's pretty good!
READING
I love, love, LOVE Kate Beaton, and this interview with her and Lisa Hanawalt is a delight.
This woman remembering the murder of her friend by another friend in highschool is haunting and brutal.
Um, Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the new Black Panther series! Will be making grabby hands at my local comic book store until this baby comes out. This older interview with him is great too.
13 short story collections to read if you think you hate short story collections.
This article on the entirely insane drama around make-up brand, Lime Crime is fascinating and, well, insane.
LISTENING TO
I go on and off Ryan Adams, but his 1989 cover album has been my jam all week and is a cool take on Taylor Swift's awesome album. All You Had to Do was Stay is definitely my favourite.

I'm moving house this weekend which is craaazy, but also really exciting. I've been living at my dad's for nearly a year as I saved to do my US trip, and so it's nice to finally feel comfortable financially enough to have my own place again. It's pretty exciting too to be moving out with one of my closest friends - a close friend I'm lucky enough to have lived with already so know that we can actually live together. So yes! That's why there haven't been any posts this week. I have a few scheduled for the week ahead and then hopefully we can resume business as usual. Anyway. Some Friday Finds for you.
WATCHING
I was lucky enough to get a ticket to a free preview screening of Macbeth this week and it was visually sublime, but lacked a real emotional entry point for me.
This piece on the female gaze in Mad Men is super interesting!
READING
I've been reading The Joy Luck Club this week. I know, pretty late to the party, but it's kind of making my week.
5 + 20 awesome lady writers you should read right now.

And the crazy train doesn't seem to be stopping. I'm still recovering from Brisbane Writers Festival, but am super pleased to say I was interviewed for Brett Michael Orr's blog, and wrote a piece on what novels should be adapted to webseries next for the Momentum blog which is also great. Anywho, what have you been up to this week?
WATCHING
Beasts of No Nation looks straight up amazing.
I'm a pretty huge Marvel fan so am getting super, super pumped for the Jessica Jones series too.
READING
And in continuing my total true crime binge, I'm reading Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker which is pretty awesome.
This article on the American Satanic Panic is fascinating too, and really engages the anatomy and psychology of a cult.
LISTENING TO
These 21 female-fronted bands are really bulking out my iTunes playlist in the best possible way.

We're on day three of Brisbane Writers Festival, and I'm exhausted already, which doesn't bode well for the weekend. Ah well, I'll power through. In more exciting news, I'm moving house! Woo! But hey, more on that another time.
WATCHING
I was really saddened to hear of the passing of Wes Craven last weekend. He's one of those formative voices for me, and really introduced me to my love of horror. Edelstein's obituary for him is a terrific read, and this old interview with Craven is a must-watch for anyone interested in horror.
On the current suite of August flops and why these original films missed the mark when it came to marketing.
I really loved Dogtooth, an earlier work by Greek filmmaker, Yorgos Lanthimos, and The Lobster looks similarly compelling.
READING
This review of Shirley Jackson's new collection of previously uncollected works is rather lovely and insightful.
Wes Craven's secret (or not so secret) feminism.
And, to take you out for the weekend, 29 short stories you should read in your twenties.

HAPPY FRIDAY! I hope you're ready for the weekend as much as I am. It's been a hell of a week and doesn't look to be slowing down, not with Queensland Poetry Festival on this weekend and Brisbane Writers Festival kicking off on the coming Wednesday. Plus I'm househunting at the moment, which is basically straight up insanity. Ah well. How about you? Any weekend plans? Or are you heading to the festivals this year?
WATCHING
This week, I won free tickets to a preview screening of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and it's already a contender for my favourite film of the year. Go see it! Pack tissues!
It's not a secret that I LOVE Bob's Burgers, so these new Funko Pop figurines are at the top of my Christmas list.
READING
Reading-wise, I am alllll about Ms. Marvel. It's pretty much everything I've ever wanted in a superhero comic. I've re-read the trade paperback's way too many times.
Looking for something to read? Check out these 24 books you should read based on your fave TV-shows.
Brodie Lancaster is one of my favourite music and pop culture writers and this piece on the disregard for fangirls is both fascinating and pretty much sums up my highschool experience.
LISTENING TO
I'm a huge Sara Bareilles fan, and a huge fan of the film Waitress, so the fact that she's written the music for the stage musical is wonderful. Especially if this song is anything to go by.
Also this video of Little Mix singing acapella is basically giving me life for the weekend.

Hey! It''s your new look~ Friday Finds. I've been thinking of mixing it up the format for a few months, but thought I'd leave it til I got back from the States. So here it is! I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that I'll be pulling back from blogging a bit. Not substantially, but I'm merging my Sunday Short post into my Friday Finds, and will be blogging on Mondays and Wednesdays too. It's a bit of a shift, but one I think I'll be able to stick to a bit more rigorously as my attentions start to be dedicated to other projects.
In related (and very exciting) news, I'm one of the new bloggers for Momentum Press! I'll be linking my posts here during my Friday Finds, so you can expect to see those popping up more and more.
Anywho, onwards and upwards!
WATCHING
I tried to watch 30 Rock years ago and couldn't get into it. Last week, I decided to give it another shot and basically powered through two and a half seasons in a matter of days. I guess this is my life now.
I also saw Trainwreck the other day! It was a lot of fun, and basically cemented my love for Amy Schumer and Bill Hader, although I agree with the reviews which like, IDK, she didn't seem like much of a mess to me?
In things I haven't watched yet, but am very excited to: Vinyl and Westworld look amazing! While it would've been great if they'd cast a trans actor in the lead role, but About Ray still looks very good. The Keeping Room definitely looks up my alley too.
READING
This week, I've been reading a few things, but nothing has stood out as much as Zora Their Eyes Were Watching God
EW has a terrific article exploring what went wrong with Josh Trank's Fantastic Four.
Read it here.
Thomas Mallon and Alice Gregory debate whether virtuous characters can be interesting for The New York Times.
Read it here.
Greg Neri is reimagining Truman Capote and Harper Lee's childhood together in his new middle grade book, Tru & Nelle.
Read about it here.
LISTENING TO
It's not a secret that I am OBSESSED with Steven Universe and Women Write About Comics has compiled a ton of the wonderful music from it, so basically I'm listening to this non-stop.
