The Great Gatsby Trailer

I’ve been a bit of a Fitzgerald fangirl since my first year of uni where we read Tender is the Night, and I’ve since gone through the bulk of his back catalogue with a fair amount of enthusiasm. The Great Gatsby really is a masterwork of fiction and a testimony to economy in literature, where a story about excess is told so sparingly. In this way, I'm kind of excited to see Baz Luhrmann tell this story on the big screen. Regardless of whether you like him as a writer or not, he's got a pretty amazing visual sensibility which will hopefully work wonderfully with the parties and the spectacle of Jazz-Age America.

In other words, I'm pretty hopeful and I'm pretty excited.

Colosse

This is so sweet, and really hits all my buttons in a short film. Over on the website, director Yves Geleyn lists The Iron Giant as an inspiration, and given that that's an all time favourite of mine, I feel like it deserves a bit of a highlight.

Crayon Dragon

I love animation for a lot of reasons really, but this short by Toniko Pantoja embodies most of them. Creatively, emotionally and artistically, this is a pretty special little film. via io9

Dear Creatures Fall 2012

I’ve been pretty into fashion and style for the last few years, not especially for the currency of it, but more for its ability to both transcend time and place and to embody it. For its ability to tell stories of an era; politically, socially and culturally. I love that. I love especially this trend now in lines to look back instead of forwards, to draw from vintage threads, cuts and prints and to modernise them.

I guess it’s about paying homage, about nostalgia for by-gone eras. For pin-up girls and forties icons, sixties skirts and the grunge of the nineties. It’s exciting either way, to reminisce and to explore and to create. Dear Creatures Fall 2012 line embodies all of this, the whimsy of wistfulness. You can see some of their new line below, but I really recommend taking a look at their website for some of their older collections. (I especially love the mustard/tan dress.)

Friday Finds

I’ve been geeking out with the best of them over the release of The Avengers (2012) and its pretty fun to see the different ways it’s exploded online. I’m kind of in love with this superhero themed wedding care of the Etsy blog.

The Guardian over in the UK has published the10 best first lines in fiction online. It’s a pretty interesting list, not all of which I agree with. Austen’s place is well-deserved though.

I’m also genuinely in love with this pink typewriter.

Marina & the Diamonds

I've been a pretty huge Marina fan since The Crown Jewels EP back in 2009; 'I am not a Robot' having been this kind of quintessential song for the end of my teens. Her new album, Electra Heart is due out at the end of the month, and I'm pretty excited. Plus stylistically, this clip is gorgeous.
